New Year Celebration in the Philippines

New Year's eve celebration in the Philippines is quite different compared to other countries. Filipinos literally start the year with a bang. Just a few days before New Year's eve, you will see lots of side walk vendors selling different kinds of firecrakers. In spite of the yearly ban on firecrackers, because of a number of accidents caused by firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices that have resulted in the loss of lives, limbs and properties, still many Filipinos see lighting of firecrackers as the traditional means to greet and celebrate the New Year eve.

Firecrackers and Noisemakers
Firecrackers are called paputok... and there is an array of firecrackers available in the market, Rebentador, Super Lolo, Super Pla Pla, Triangulo( triangularly shaped firecrackers), Bawang, Sinturon ni Judas (Judas Belt), Jumbo Fountain, Whiste Bomb, best selling firecrackers like Baby Rockets (Kuwitis), Luisis ,Watusi, Bulalakaw (Comets) just to name a few.

Bocaue and Santa Maria Bulacan are the home of firecracker industry in the Philippines, which supplies most of the country's demand for firecrackers. In recent years, local manufacturers have begun producing impressive aerial fireworks displays. Though the Filipino fireworks industry is about a century old, it is a newcomer in aerial displays. With the new introduction of modern aerial fireworks displays in the country and the recent first World Pro Olympics which took place in The Esplanade at the back of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City from December 26 to 30, this event has raised fireworks to an art form.

December 31 is usually an unofficial public holiday in the Philippines, so people can prepare for the New Year eve celebration, it is a busy day for all families, preparing the food for the media noche, people are rushing in to buy firecrackers in preparation for the night celebration. This is the time of the year when children have a good time blowing their plastic toy trumphets called "Torotot". It comes in different shapes and sizes, colors and designs, it is a replica of a trumpet, Pinoy style. Children also enjoy stamping on their watusi - a kind of small firecracker that when rubbed against a rough surface and released, crackles into a little sparkwork dance.

Filipinos New Year's Beliefs and Practices
Aside from lighting firecrackers and having firework displays, Filipinos have other beliefs and practices which are associated and believed to bring good luck, fortune, and prosperity in the New Year.

The noise and the firecrackers is belive to drive the evil spirit away and make the New Year bountiful and blessed.
You should put coins/money in your pocket so that next year will be prosperous.
You should open all the windows, doors lights so that all the graces will come to your home as you welcome the New Year.
Some believe that you have to wear polka dots shirts or dress because it symbolise money, and it must have a deep pocket and filled with money bills and coins and jingled it at the stroke of midnight for good luck .
Some people pay off their debts in the hope that they will not be saddled with debt throughout the year.

The countdown of New year varies from family to family or from region to region. At the strike of 12:00 midnight, the noise becomes defeaning, churchbells rings , firecrackers rules the sky, kids gaping in awe as they see the different firecrackers, blooming in the sky. The banging and booming rise to a climax which includes clanging of old pots and pans, blowing jeep, car or tricyle horns, ambulance sirens for full one minute as the countdown to New Year.

It is also a favorite thing to do with children, is to jump twelve times so they will get taller next year the higher you jump the taller you grow. The loud noises and sounds of merrymaking are not only meant to celebrate the coming of the New Year but are also supposed to drive away bad spirits.

Around 12:15 am, the noise stops and the air is filled with human voice and the family starts to eat a thanksgiving feast called Media Noche, it is believe that we should put as much food on the table so that next year you will have food all year round. Twelve round fruits should be on the table as it is a sign of prosperity for the next twelve months. There is also a midnight mass celebration to welcome the New Year and to thank God for all His blessings.

A Happy and Prosperous New Year To All !!!

Releive Strecth Mark

Are you looking for something to help remove your stretch mark? try this product, Cocoa butter is a super moisturizer and cosmetic ingredient for the skin. Cocoa trees produce fruit in the form of large green pods, with each pod containing 30 or 40 beans. At maturity, these pods are harvested by hand and broken apart to extract the beans. After drying, fermentation and roasting, the beans are crushed and pressed to extract the rich, creamy vegetable fat, which we know as cocoa butter. The velvety, luxurious texture that we so love in chocolate comes from cocoa butter. Imagine how wonderful that will feel on your skin! It will really silken and soften your skin, improving the appearance even of stretch marks and blemishes. X'MAS IN OUR HEARTS

I like this x'mas song wanna sing it here and pls join with me lol

Whenever I see girls and boys
selling lanterns on the streets
i remember the Child
in the manger as He sleeps
wherever there are people
giving gifts, exchanging cards
i believe that Christmas
is truly in their hearts

[refrain]
Let’s light our Christmas trees
for a bright tomorrow
where nations are at peace
and all are one in God

[chorus]
Let’s sing Merry Christmas
and a happy holiday
this season, may we never forget
the love we have for Jesus
let Him be the One to guide us
as another new year starts
and may the spirit of Christmas
be always in our hearts

In every prayer and every song
the community unites
celebrating the birth
of our Savior, Jesus Christ

let love, like that starlight
on that first Christmas morn
lead us back to the manger
where Christ the Child was born

So, come let us rejoice
come and sing a Christmas carol
with one big joyful voice
proclaim the name of the Lord!

[repeat chorus 2x]

Be always in our hearts

My 1st X'mas Decoration

Im so excited yesterday when my Asawa told me that he dont need to work and told me that were going to get a real X'mas tree, in my own opinion i want a white plastic X'mas tree its for long lasting use and this year i want a blue x'mas lolz...but he didnt like a fake one and the price of the X'mas tree that i want not too cheap lol... thats why i go with his opinion or else dont have X'mas tree this year if we didnt both meet in the middle what we both want lol....after buying the X'mas tree we went home, i check all the ornaments if its gud enough for the X'mas tree then later i found out that we just have few, coz last year im not the one who decorated lol, this is my 1st time X'mas together with my Asawa, and 1st time in the history also that i am the one who decorate the 8"feet X'mas tree lol... is it quiet tall istn it???...b4 when i was in Manila i let my sis do the decoration she is very gud at it, just take a look and make a little help not like this year that i need to do it by myself coz i have an Asawa na lolz...need to learn from it and its one of the duty for being housewife to make the house look great...and of course i wanna fell the spirit of x'mas since i cant attend the Misa De Gallo, Celebration here in US is Very diferent they way we celebrate it in Philippines...since this is my 1st X'mas far from my Family i miss it, how i wish i can spend Xmas together with them, but im hoping someday we can be together again in X'mas god willing...its hard to adjust specially if your living far from your family the people that you grew up with, but since this is my choice having a foreigner Asawa dont have Any regrets just need to consider lots of things espcially those things that u use to do when i was single, if we have an Asawa we have limitation and of course every move that you need to do u need to tell him or ask permision, im not saying that i have regrets for being far from my Family this is the way it is...Actually My Asawa is the best choice that i made, he teach me everything that i need to learn and he make my life complete and worthwhile while being together everyday im learning many lesson especially im a step mom of the two cute daughters its very chalengeable...not that easy but i can handle it now...not like b4 its drive me crazy sometimes....opppsss i think i need to end up what i am writing right now lol b4 my teras fall down...see yeah later folks thanks for reading and droping my sites!!!!

A TIME OF CHRISTMAS

Make a paragraph or two regarding your personal meaning of Christmas, below the paragraph of the one who tagged you and you may put your name at the end of the paragraph linking back to your blog or right to the post of this particular tag. Then you tag as many as you can.

Christmas for me is the ultimate reminder on how much God loves us, that He gave His only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior. For me, its a celebration of love and a time to share our blessings to others.. a time for giving and reaching out to the less fortunate and it's also a wonderful time to be with your family. Christmas is not just all about santa claus or the gifts that you will receive or for shopping, we should always remember that Jesus is the reason for the season and let us reflect on how much God loves us. - Just Let Go/Pieces of Me*Christmas is about giving love, forgiving. This remind us how lucky and how God love us when he gave us his only son Jesus Christ. A time for sharing our blessing to our family, friends and to others. - Celebrate Life/My Journey.*Christmas for me is not the new things that we have and enjoying the bounties in life but remembering that someone is born to redeem us from our sins and making sure of our salvation Teebob.*The true meaning of christmas for me is sharing, giving, expressing love to one another, and remebering that there is one person up there, who is born on the 25th of december to save us from everything . A lot of people told me that christmas is for kids. yes, it's true but I prefer to say that christmas is for everybody and sharing love to one another is the keyword remeber, "you can give without loving but you can't love without giving ". Alaverde33*Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. The date of the celebration is traditional and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus birth with various secular customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. In most places around the world Christmas day happens on December 25. It's a special time of the year - a season of love and a season of giving. A time to share, to give and of course to receive a wonderful gift from beloved..Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.*As the word Christmas itself convey, this day is the celebration of Christ. It's his day since this is the day we celebrate his birthday. Everything we do on this day should be in his honor...just like we get the honor when we celebrate our birthdays. So do what you normally do on this day but remember to give the honor to the celebrant himself, Christ. Juliana of Pinay Wahm and Teacher' Corner.*Christmas is an event that happen each year to remind us that a savior was born to save us from our sins. People gathered together in the Church to thank God for bringing his Son to our lives. Its a time for sharing, giving, loving, and a mass celebration to all Christians by going to the midnight Mass. Runaway THoughts of Emz and Our Journey to this so called Life .*Christmas is an annual holiday that people around the world celebrates. People are gathered together to celebrate this traditional festivities. A time for giving, sharing, caroling and eating of course. It's the only event of they year that Santa comes out. Kohler's Realm*Christmas to is a birthday of Jesus Christ. It's also giving and sharing to one another as it's a traditional expression around the world. Time to gathered with family and friends, caroling and joy as we welcome the other year. Christmas is a special day for all of us, especially to kids as they wait for Santa. As what they said "Give Love On Christmas Day". It's time of love and joy. Anna's Daily Journal
*-A Christmas for me is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus who we believe who is our great savior and who died for us because of our sins. As we believe he is our Almighty Father, during Christmas time, whoever who is our enemy is we forgive them and realized its time to show love, kind, goodness and being generous to someone we care about and that is why we exchange gifts during Christmas time and get together with our family and relatives. Even though, we doesn't get any gifts from somebody else that we gave one, its just alright as long as we show love to them, its not only in Christmas time to show of affection to somebody else, anytime we can do it, but because it is already also our tradition as Christian people who believes we need to give a gift to someone during Christmas time specially to our family and friends. Well, it is nice also we have a Christmas celebration, so that we can receieve some gifts from someone who loves us and they can show their affections to us even by just giving gifts or a Christmas card.gmunchkin-*
*-Christmas is a time of gift-giving, when children hope to receive presents from their parents, other family, and friends and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at once a time for joyous celebration and solemnity. During the month before Christmas, there are parties and chances to eat good food and sing traditional Christmas carols, and its celebrated in the home with an evergreen tree decorated with a small ornaments and electric lights, and the other they decorated at the outside of the house with many wreath and lights, they have also decorated maniature of the manger or Santa Claus and inside too. The family get together on Christmas Eve to have a dinner. Its so wonderful with the family on this season! Amazing Life
*Christmas to me means celebrating the birth of jesus christ, its time for sharing love and spending time with family, time to give gift & receive , time to be thankful that you have sorrounded with love by friends and family!melsworld

Pancit Bijon

A package of bijon
Oil
garlic
half a pound pork (loin or pork chops), cut julienne style
(if you can get Chinese pork bbq, wonderful
chinese sausauge, sliced (pepperoni will do)
onion, peeled and sliced
chicken (to sub for pork if you can't have pork) cabbage or napa cabbage
bean sprouts
shrimps
pea pods
soy sauce
chicken stock
patis
spring onions
scrambled egg

This is another type of pancit that I have never cooked before (I am partial to sotanghon and canton) but since I'm getting short of ideas on what to feature here, I thought I would give this a try. Pancit bijon is rice noodles which you can get from any Asian store. What's beautiful with this recipe is that you can substitute the noodles with vermicilli or angel hair pasta.

Soak rice noodles in tepid water (barely warm) while the wok is heating (for about 10 mins) until the noodles become supple.

In the heated wok, heat the oil, add the garlic and pork (or chicken) until the meat is brown. Add the sausage slices, along with the onion, cabbage, sprouts, peapods and shrimps. Stir fry for a few minutes. Add soy sauce, chicken stock, patis, and spring onions. Stir fry until the cabbage is tender. Add the drained noodles. Mix until noodles are tender, not soggy.

Place in a large bowl, garnish with lemon or with parsley, cilantro and more green onions. Serve with lemon juice/soy sauce mix.

Shrimp and Bamboo Shoots in Coconut Milk

shrimps - get the cooked, frozen ones, tail on or no tail - so you don't have to cook and peel yourself - about 2 lbs (1 kg)

1 can of coconut milk

1 can of bamboo shoots

1 can of straw mushrooms

1 can of water chestnuts (get the sliced ones)

1 medium sized onion, sliced

fresh ginger root, about 2-3 slivers

salt and pepper to taste

basil leaves

You can also add other greens if you want.
Drain bamboo shoots, straw mushrooms and water chestnuts.

Mix all ingredients in the casserole except basil leaves. Simmer. Since everything is cooked, there's really no need to boil the hell out of it, probably just simmer for 5 minutes. Just be careful not to harden the shrimps.

Fresh Lumpia

Wrappers
2 large eggs
1-1/4 cups water
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon salt

About 3 tablespoons cooking oil

Filling
1/2 cup julienned onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 boneless, skinless chicken breast half, thinly sliced
1/4 pound medium raw shrimp, shelled, deveined, and halved
1-1/2 cups finely julienned jicama
1/2 small carrot, finely julienned
2 green onions, finely julienned
2 teaspoons oyster-flavored sauce
1 teaspoon Filipino fish sauce (patis)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
5 tender lettuce leaves

It's A Wrap
If you don't have the time to make pancake wrappers for fresh lumpia, you can also use Vietnamese rice paper wrappers, which are sold in many Asian grocery stores. Look for round wrappers about 8 inches across. They're paper-thin, translucent, and brittle, with a delicate lattice pattern from the woven drying racks on which they're made. To soften them, dip them briefly in a bowl of warm water, shaking off the excess before you put the wrapper on your plate. In a few seconds, the wrapper will be soft enough to roll around the lettuce and the filling.

Lumpia are among the most famous of all Filipino dishes. These are not the fried, eggroll-like lumpia you may have tried, but a lighter, home-style version, in which delicate egg pancakes are rolled around lettuce and a tasty chicken, shrimp, and vegetable filling. If you have adventurous guests, let everybody make their own lumpia right at the table-it's a great way to get a dinner party rolling!

Getting Ready

Prepare wrappers: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, water, cornstarch, flour, and salt until smooth. Strain batter.

Place a nonstick 8-inch omelet pan over medium heat until hot; brush with 1/4 teaspoon oil. Pour 1/4 cup batter into pan; tilt pan so batter covers entire surface. Cook until edge of wrapper is lightly browned and surface looks dry, about 45 seconds. Loosen edge with a spatula, turn wrapper, and cook 10 seconds longer. Turn wrapper out of pan onto a plate. Repeat to use all batter.

Cooking

Prepare filling: Place a wok over high heat until hot. Add 1 tablespoon oil, swirling to coat sides. Add onion and garlic. Stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add chicken and shrimp; stir-fry for 2 minutes. Remove from pan. Heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add jicama and carrot; stir-fry for 1 minute. Add green onions; cook until vegetables are tender crisp, about 2 minutes. Return chicken mixture to pan; add oyster-flavored sauce, fish sauce, and pepper; cook for 1 minute. Cool.

Cut lettuce in half lengthwise. For each lumpia, place a piece of lettuce on wrapper. Spoon about 1/3 cup filling into center of wrapper. Fold bottom third of wrapper over filling, then fold in sides.

Serve with garlic dipping sauce or a mixture of hoisin sauce and soy sauce.

Bibingka Cassava

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

1 cup evaporated milk (fresh milk can be substituted)

7 cups raw cassava, grated (or frozen) - cassava are now available in most groceries in cities with a large Latin American or Asian population; if you can't find it in your area, I'll post a rice bibingka recipe in the next months - sorry

1/4 cup butter, melted

banana leaves (available frozen in Philippine stores; or use cookie sheet or something)

For the topping

1 cup thick coconut milk (available in Asian stores)

2 tablespoon flour

1 can condensed milk

2 egg yolks

2 tablespoons grated cheddar cheese

Beat eggs and sugar till lemon colored. Add the rest of the ingredients. Pour into a greased 9x9 in pan lined with banana leaves (or cookie sheet).

Mix coconut milk with the flour. Add condensed milk and cook over medium heat till thick. Add eggyolks and mix well. Return to heat and cook 5 minutes more. Pour over baked bibingka. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and broil till golden brown.

PALITAW

Sweet rice flour - about a cup.

3/4 cup water

coconut flakes

Lots of white sugar

Toasted linga (sesame seeds).

This one is very easy to do. Palitaw is a Tagalog term for this dessert or snack. In Aklan, we have our own version. My mother used to make this as quick snacks although she called it differently and instead of rolling the cake into white coconut flakes, she used bukayo (sweetened coconut flakes in brown sugar) as topping. I forgot how she called it though - I think inday-inday. I never thought that this was easy to do - but it is.

Mix rice flour with water to make dough. Make little balls then flatten. Boil water in a saucepan. Drop flattened dough balls into boiling water. The cakes are cooked when they float. Remove from water, let cool a little bit, roll in combined sugar and toasted sesame seeds and coconut flakes.

Puto Bumbong

Puto bumbong and bibingka are two native holiday treats that are bound to the pre-drawn Misa de Aguinaldo, which starts December 16 and is held everyday for nine days until Christmas Day.

In the city, even well-dressed matrons buy them dripping with melted butter and sprinkled with coconut milk to get them going for the nine dawn Masses.

The number of street stalls serving these delicacies has dwindled through the years, as has the number of church-goers during the Simbang Gabi. But there are still a few restaurants in town that serve the faithful who attend the dawn Mass.

Filipino tradition in PI on X'mas

It is a Filipino tradition for children to visit

their godparents and elderly relatives
on Christmas day. This child is

showing respect
for his godmother by taking her hand

to his forehead. In return, he receives

a blessing or a gift.

Christmas in the Philippines is a mixture of Western and native Filipino traditions. Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, sending Christmas cards, and singing carols have all been inherited from the cultures of the West. However, these have all been adapted to fit the nature and personality of the Filipino people.

Christmas Eve in the Philippines is one of the traditions most families celebrate. It is a night without sleep and a continuous celebration moving right into Christmas Day. As December 24th dawns, the last Mass of Simbang Gabi is attended; then preparation begins for Noche Buena, which is a family feast that takes place after midnight.

The Noche Buena is very much like an open house celebration. Family, friends, relatives, and neighbors drop by to wish every family member "Maligayang Pasko" (Merry Christmas). Food is in abundance, often served in buffet style. Guests or visitors partake of the food prepared by the host family (even though they are already full or bloated!). Among the typical foods prepared in the Philippines during Christmas are: lechon (roasted pig), pancit, barbecue, rice, adobo, cakes (Western and native rice cakes), lumpia, etc. There is also an abundance of San Miguel beer, wine, and liquor, which makes the celebration of Christmas indeed intoxicating!

The streets are well lit and are full of activities. The children run in and out of the house to play, to eat, and to play again. The Christmas Eve gathering provides an opportunity for a reunion of immediate and distant family members. Some families may choose to exchange gifts at this time; others wait until Christmas day.

In general, the center of a family's Christmas gathering is always the lola, the endearing term used for a family matriarch or grandmother, who is deeply respected, highly revered, and always present. Filipinos remember how their lola had their children form a line and step up to receive a small gift of some coins. The older the child, the more coins he or she receives.

Some families have a talent show during Christmas Eve celebration. Children are asked to perform. One might sing a Christmas song, others might play a musical instrument, or others may recite a poem or do a dance. The celebration continues until about 6 o'clock in the morning. Those who cannot attend Mass the night before will go to the morning Mass on Christmas day.

Christmas day is a popular day for children to visit their uncles, aunts, godmothers, and godfathers. At each home they are presented with a gift, usually candy, money, or a small toy. Food and drinks are also offered at each stop. It is a day of family closeness, and everyone wishes good cheer and glad tidings.

X'MAS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Our country of the Philippines is the “Land of Piestas” and at Christmas time, this is particularly true. Filipinos are proud to proclaim their Christmas celebration to be the longest and merriest in the world. Its begins formally on December 16 with attendance at the first of nine pre-dawn or early morning masses and continues on nonstop until the first Sunday of January, Feast of the Three Kings, the official end of the season.

The Philippines is the only Asian country where Christians be in the majority. Majority of its people are Roman Catholic. Christmas, therefore, is a very important and respected holiday for most Filipinos. It is a time for family, for sharing, for giving, and a time for food, fun, and friendship.

To most Filipinos, Christmas is the most anticipated fiesta of the year and is celebrated accordingly. The splendid weather of this tropical island nation, the abundance and beauty of its flowers, and lovely landscape, its multitude of culinary delights, and above all its warm-hearted people with their true devotion to family and faith all contribute to a holiday celebrated in the true Philippines fiesta tradition.

Place I was Born and Raised in Homonhon Island

I just wanna share you the history the place i grew up with in the Philippines, enjoy reading The History Of Samar maybe someday you will come there and visit the Paradise Island and beautiful beaches ....The Province of Eastern Samar was created by Republic Act. No. 4221 approved by Congress on June 19, 1965. It divided the whole island of Samar into three independent provinces: Northern Samar, Western Samar (subsequently renamed Samar), and Eastern Samar. The eastern province was to be composed of 23 municipalities, with Borongan as the capital. The first set of officials were elected in 1967.Eastern Samar played important roles in the country’s history. On March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan first set foot on Philippine soil in the island of Homonhon, on his way to rediscover the Philippines for the western world. An American garrison occupation troops was annihilated by the townspeople of Balangiga on September 28, 1901. Now known in history as the “Balangiga Massacre,” the accident triggered a wave of reprisals against the people of the whole island of Samar. On October 17, 1944, rangers of the U.S. Army landed on the tiny island of Suluan Guiuan and had their first encounter of the Philippine territory three days before General Douglas MacArthur landed on the beaches of Leyte.Earliest known chronicles reveal that further contact with western civilization, aside from the Magellan landing, occurred as early as 1596 when Jesuit missionaries worked their way from the western coast of the island of Samar and established mission centers in what is now the Eastern Samar territory. It is most probable that the populated existing settlements were created pueblos shortly after this time. The eastern part of the island was known as “ibabao” and distinct from Samar, which was the name of the western part. It was Magellan who named the place where he landed as Homonhon.
